Scheduling routine annual physical exams with your Primary Care Physician (PCP) is key to keeping up on your healthcare needs and detecting health problems before they become serious.

When most people make their to-do list, it is filled with daily tasks, chores and household responsibilities. We take care of the people we love and try to get the most important things done first. With Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day in June, it’s a good reminder that everyone should make their health a top priority, especially the mothers, fathers and other caregivers who tend to put themselves last on the list. If you’re someone who struggles to prioritize yourself and your health, then you should know that taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your to-do list and your loved ones. Preventive care — things like annual physical exams, immunizations and cancer screenings — is a crucial part of maintaining good health and it is something that people of all ages should prioritize.

All health plans offered through Access Health CT cover preventive care services at no cost to the member, so make sure to use the benefits available to you. You can check your Plan Documents via your specific insurance company’s member website or speak directly with your insurance company to fully understand preventive care services and all other covered services under your plan.

Make an appointment for your annual physical exam, and your Primary Care Physician (PCP) will review the screenings that are appropriate for you and can discuss suggested immunizations.

Screenings include:

  • Blood Pressure
  • Cholesterol
  • Mental Health
  • Diabetes
  • Bone Density
  • Cancer (Breast, Prostate, Cervical, etc.)

Immunizations include:

  • Flu
  • Chicken Pox
  • Shingles
  • Tetanus

NOTE: Women can visit a PCP for annual physical exams and an Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OB-GYN) for healthcare related to women’s reproductive health. It is important to understand the capabilities of each provider if you choose to visit only one annually.

These are just a few examples of preventive care, but you should speak with your provider to get specific recommendations for you. By taking the time now to prioritize preventive care, you can maintain good health, detect health problems early and be there for your family when they need you. Having health insurance can make it easier to access preventive care services and other care. So, don’t put yourself last ─ prioritize your health with preventive care and make sure you are covered by enrolling in health insurance and keeping it active.

Don’t let cost or a lack of knowledge be a barrier to taking care of yourself. Understand your plan, stay up-to-date on preventive care and seek medical care when you need it. Your health is important, so prioritize it and use your health insurance coverage to your advantage.
